The Chanel couture show on Monday morning ended like no other — without an appearance by Karl Lagerfeld. Instead, when it came time for the bow, Virginie Viard, Lagerfeld’s right hand in the design studio, stood in for him, after which a voice announced over the public address, first in English then in French, that Lagerfeld had asked her to do so, while noting that he was expected at the second show.
