The men of Black Panther established themselves as style kingsat the Los Angeles premiere of the movie last month, and now they're here to reign—a.k.a. show the rest of us how to look Wakanda-good, too. At the Seoul premiere of the movie, the cast assembled in somewhat casual gear—not quite the to-eleven formalwear they rocked in LA. But their excellent fits doubled as a quick-and-dirty lesson in how every man can look better in his clothes right now. The first thing you notice about what writer and director Ryan Coogler and actors Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan have is the thing you don't notice—that their looks are void of bright colors and trendy details. (That said, Lupita Nyong'o's metallic dress is a pretty incredible argument for baroque detailing.) They also aren't over-styled with bells, whistles, or complicated layers. This is simple, to-the-point style in 2018. Here, their three ways to transfer their excellence to your own closet now.
Make Tan Your New Go-To Neutral
The cast of Black Panther tripled down on tan for a reason: the vaguely '70s hue is having a moment right now. Think of it like the "come hither" of neutrals, a warm and inviting alternative to gray and navy that'll refresh your style without making you stick out like a sore thumb. If tan is underrepresented in your wardrobe, start with shirts and sweaters in the color, and then ramp up to a luxe suede jacket.
Buy All the Slim-Cut Pants
Roomy pants are back. Pleated pants are back.
Pants with hanging straps that look like they were purchased at Hot Topicare even back. And while we encourage you to try new things, you still can't beat slim, straight pants for looking modern, handsome, and over five feet tall. The
Black Panther crew has all the bases covered here: Ryan Coogler in black jeans, Chadwick Boseman in gray trousers, and Michael B. Jordan in indigo denim. Make sure you can check those boxes, too.
Lace Up Like a Grown Up
Good shoes will change your style game, and owning more than one do-it-all pair will give you the flexibility you want in every setting. Imagine all of these guys in the same boring black oxford. Not great, right? Boots in black and brown, with and without laces, and sneakers that can stand up to a swaggy suede coat are all important purchases. Even if you don't have the scratch to buy them all in a single season, making your way through the list little by little is a worthwhile task.
